How can you avoid first time homebuyer mistakes?

On Behalf of Law Offices of Bonnie M. Benson, P.A. | Jul 15, 2021 | Real Estate Law, Real Estate Transactions

When seeking out your first home, it is likely you will feel overwhelmed. After all, you have a lot of information to process and contend with. On top of that, mistakes can end up costing you time, money and even your perfect home.

So how do you avoid these mistakes? What can you do to make the first time homebuying process as easy on you as possible?

Do not focus on perfection

Business Insider takes a look at some of the most common homebuyer mistakes first-time buyers make. The first thing you want to do is discard the notion of a “perfect home” entirely. This ends up trapping homebuyers in a potentially unrealistic ideal, making it easy to miss out on great homes that might be near-perfect fits.

You also want to avoid getting distracted by the “icing”. This is a way of referring to cosmetic upgrades that do nothing for the structural integrity or soundness of a home. While it is perfectly normal for homeowners to add stainless steel appliances, granite countertops or hardwood floors, you should also check that the roof is up to date, that the walls have good insulation and that the boiler works.

Always remember the importance of location

Pay attention to location, too. First-time buyers often get wrapped up in the excitement of a home itself without remembering the importance of location in resell value. Remember that the location is the only part of a home that you will never get to change and do your research on neighborhood safety, amenities, and the housing market in the area.

Finally, always act with the assistance of a real estate agent. It is their job to make your house hunting experience easier and more successful.
