Recognizing the signs of nursing home abuse

On Behalf of Law Offices of Bonnie M. Benson, P.A. | May 12, 2023 | Elder Law

Ensuring the safety and well-being of your loved ones in nursing homes is of paramount importance. However, nursing home abuse is a sad reality that affects numerous elders across the country.

This blog will discuss ways to identify nursing home abuse. Knowledge of these signs can help protect your loved ones and ensure they receive the care they deserve.

Physical signs of abuse

Physical signs of abuse can often be the most obvious indicators. These can include unexplained bruises, cuts, burns or abrasions. Sudden weight loss, bedsores or frequent illnesses may also suggest neglect or abuse. If you notice any of these signs, it is important to ask questions and seek answers.

Behavioral indicators of abuse

Behavioral changes can also be a significant indicator of nursing home abuse. A resident who suddenly becomes withdrawn, depressed, anxious or fearful may be experiencing abuse. Unusual behaviors such as rocking, biting or other signs of trauma may also be evident. Changes in sleep patterns, loss of appetite or reluctance to speak in the presence of nursing home staff can also signal potential abuse.

Steps to take if you suspect abuse

If you suspect nursing home abuse, it is crucial to take immediate action. Speak with the nursing home management about your concerns and document all your observations and conversations. If the situation does not improve or if the management does not take your concerns seriously, you may need to report the situation to the local or state authorities responsible for regulating nursing homes.

Identifying nursing home abuse involves being vigilant to physical signs and behavioral changes in your loved one. By knowing the signs of abuse and taking prompt action, you can help protect your loved ones from harm.
