What do you know about avoiding medical debt?

On Behalf of Law Offices of Bonnie M. Benson, P.A. | Aug 4, 2021 | Elder Law

As you reach the age of retirement and plan for the next phase of your life in Delaware, you may worry about your ability to cover medical bills. Do you know how to protect your finances while improving your health?

Forbes offers older adults insights into strategies for sidestepping medical debt. You do not have to spend your retirement struggling under the weight of unnecessary financial burdens.

Cover Medicare gaps

While Medicare may prove a great help in covering medical expenses, it does not handle everything. You must not forget about coinsurance and deductibles. While learning about Medicare Parts A and B, look into Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C. The private Medicare insurance option reduces your medical costs as long as you remain in your network. Rather than Medicare Advantage, you may prefer an alternate supplemental coverage option.

Sign up for Medicare on time

Do not put off signing up for Medicare. You incur penalties for enrolling late, and that cost only increases as time passes. When you turn 65, you have a seven-month initial enrollment period, which activates three months in the months leading up to your 65th birthday. It stretches three months after your birthday month.

Look over medical bills

Take care to review your medical bills before paying them. They may contain the wrong code, or you could receive the bill before a Medicare supplement company does. You should also comb over your Medicare Summary Notice every quarter to look for mistakes. If you find any, let your physician’s office know about them.

You should enjoy your golden years, not spend them worrying about how to pay for quality health care. Hopefully, these tips help you experience peace of mind.
